RenewableNI is frustrated at the failure to restore the Northern Ireland Executive.
Waiting up to 12 weeks for an election, with the possibility of no Executive being formed afterwards, will only add to the difficulties being faced by the people of Northern Ireland.
At the time of a cost-of-living crisis and energy emergency, renewable electricity has the power to help. But like many other industries, we are hampered by the lack of a functioning government here.
RenewableNI has continued to engage with the elected MLAs during the period without the Assembly, to ensure the benefits of developing renewable electricity are understood. But there has only been so much the zombie Ministers have been able to implement.
From midnight, we will not even have these roles in place.
Reaching a target of 80 per cent renewable electricity by 2030 will create jobs, boost the economy and lessen climate change. It is also the only solution that will reduce bills and provide long-term energy security.
We are a small place, but have the perfect settings for wind and solar power generation, backed up by battery storage, to meet most of the needs within the next seven years. We have an industry ready and willing to work at pace to deliver vital electricity.
Unfortunately, what we don’t have is a functioning Assembly to change the planning process that is not fit for purpose.
We do not have the government to implement supports that will give international developers the confidence to invest in Northern Ireland.
RenewableNI, on behalf of those across the renewable energy sector, call for vital change in attitude in political leadership in NI and GB to put the needs of our citizens first.
Given the issues our people are facing, the justifications for collapsing the Assembly are no longer credible.
