RenewableNI is delighted to see the decision for a new wind farm granted planning permission this week.

RenewableNI Director, Steven Agnew, said: “Every new turbine connected means lower electricity prices, lowering carbon emissions and rates income supporting local councils and wider NI.

“Northern Ireland’s Climate Act set a target of 80 per cent by 2030 and there are enough renewable electricity projects in the pipeline to see this delivered.

“Unfortunately, we are seeing them stuck in the planning stage for too long.  This project was originally submitted in 2019.  It took four years for the planning application to be refused by Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council planning committee.  The appeal was submitted in January 2024.

“Northern Ireland has seen only five new wind farms connected during this time.  We have gone from leaders to laggards as we wait for policy reform.  This announcement is a rare opportunity for Northern Ireland renewables to celebrate.”

Commenting on the long-awaited decision, Project Manager for RES, Jennifer McCorry, said:We have warmly welcomed the decision to consent Magheramore Wind Farm, following a successful appeal. Following the hearing which was held in April 2025, we are pleased that the Planning Appeal Commission took the decision to approve the 6-turbine wind farm, located near Dungiven, just three months later.

“Magheramore has been carefully designed to fit sensitively into the existing landscape, in turn unlocking much needed investment in the local economy. RES has a strong track record of working with the supply chain around its projects to maximise inward investment, and Magheramore Wind Farm has the potential to deliver a £1.6 – £2 million boost into the local economy during construction alone.

“RES has been playing a pivotal role in developing, constructing and operating renewable energy projects from our office in Larne, Northern Ireland since the early 1990s. With a wealth of experience across a wide range of disciplines, we continue to play an active part in Northern Ireland’s clean energy transition.

More information on the Magheramore project will be available on the dedicated website at magheramore-windfarm.co.uk as the project progresses.
