Speaking after the Northern Ireland Assembly passed a motion on the Green Energy Transition, Steven Agnew, Director, RenewableNI said;
“The Programme for Government makes it clear that Northern Ireland has the potential to be an energy exporter. The Green Energy Transition Motion passed by the Assembly shows a collective desire to live up to this potential and advance planning reform, a support scheme for renewable development and sufficient energy infrastructure.
Fundamental to progress is the North-South Interconnector. Without it, we cannot achieve these ambitions and risk deterring future investment in renewables which has the potential to save consumers a further £110m per year.
The stark reality is that unless we create a supportive environment for renewable technology by tackling these issues quickly, the 80% renewables by 2030 target will be left blowing in the wind.
We hope our political leaders continue to show the collaboration and support evidenced by agreement on the Green Energy Transition Motion and move forward with pace to deliver on a clean, green future for all.”
The Renewables Reward report by energy consultants Baringa shows that to date, consumers in Northern Ireland have saved £200M as a result of investment in renewables. This figure could increase by an additional £110m per year if we achieve a 80% renewables by 2030 target.
