RenewableNI, the voice of Northern Ireland’s renewable electricity, welcomes today’s report by SONI.
Shaping Our Electricity Future Roadmap, is SONI’s plan to transform the high voltage network to support Northern Ireland’s fight against climate change
The report follows a 14-week consultation across all sectors of society, which RenewableNI contributed to, and two years of SONI research.
Shaping Our Electricity Future Roadmap provides an outline of the key developments needed on the transmission grid but also includes the changes required in electricity system operations.
Speaking about the report, Steven Agnew, Head of RenewableNI, said:
“RenewableNI is eagerly awaiting the new Northern Ireland Energy Strategy which is expected will set a target for at least 70% renewable electricity generation by 2030.
“To surpass this minimum target it is vital that as we build out new renewable generation we also develop the grid to ensure we deliver clean, green electricity to the consumer in an efficient manner.
“This is essential to maximise decarbonisation and price benefits.
“RenewableNI therefore welcomes SONI’s Shaping Our Electricity Future policy.
“It is important that the Department for the Economy, the Utility Regulator and SONI work collaboratively to deliver grid development with the urgency needed in the face of the climate emergency.
“In doing so it is important that we all engage with communities on the benefits that increased renewable generation offers for our economy, our people and our environment.”
